As of time of posting this blog entry, Canon still does not support Vista x64. Here's a trick that I found to work:
1) Install 32-bit Vista drivers. You normally get the EOS Solution disk with your camera body. Just use those.
2) Here is the magical bit... On your camera, change the connection mode from PC Connection to Print/PTP.
3) Now connect your camera to your Vista x64 pc.
Voila! It works like magic. =)

ReplyDeleteI did not have to install camera drivers, just the Windows Vista 64bit compatible software from Canon (ZoomBrowser EX, EOS Utility and Digital Photo Professional).
The new software versions downloaded from the Canon's website can be installed to clean/new Vista 64bit if you have the old driver/software CD available during install - that is nice feature.
The download process feels a little bit slower with this PTP setting - but at least it works now!
You are a lifesaver ... mainly because the reverse is needed for Vista 32 bit.

ReplyDeleteYes this works for me as well... Only one thing is left: if I try to use EOS Utility to operate the camera through the pc, it says I shall set the communication to "PC" instead of "PTP". Doing so, Vista x64 asks for a driver... :(

this works to the extent that its possible to download pics from the cannon cam.Makes it like a card reader but slower.However none of the usefull apps are available and its impossible to do remote shooting etc.It would be nice if cannon wrote the drivers for the 64 bit for real,then these workarounds wouldnt be needed.

ReplyDeleteThis doesn't seem to work for me. I'm only taking RAW images (*.CR2 files). Any ideas about what could be wrong? Do you guys get it to work with raw images or only JPGs?
ReplyDeleteWhich import method do you use? Are you using any of Canon's divers/apps?
Using the Windows 7 (x64) built in picture importer doesn't work (it just hangs there until I disconnect the camera).
I've also tried to import photos via Photoshop Elements v7, but it also hangs.
Viewing the CF card in the explorer gives very strange results. It pops up new folders every second or so. It begins with:
Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL\Removable storage\DCIM\126CANON
Next, 127CANON pops up and then 128CANON and so on...
Looks like the the camera invents folders on the fly or something.
And yes, I have switched the camera to PTP communication mode.

ReplyDeleteI can't understand how you managed to install the 32-bit USB driver under Vista 64-bit. When I try to do it I get an error saying something like "Cannot install under this environment" :(
